Slavery, Abortion and Denying Communion

Those who are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it – So Randall Smith begins his must-read essay in The Catholic Thing – a must-read especially by our bishops – on another analogy between slavery and abortion. As Smith points out, just as the Magisterium condemned slavery in no uncertain terms, so too has the Church vociferously condemned abortion and other crimes against life. But just as the bishops were soft on slave-owners, for the practice was so entrenched, and, well, what could they do? Deny slave-owners Holy Communion, and create mayhem?

So too, our bishops are soft with the Trudeaus, Pelosis, Bidens, what could they do? Actually speak out, and deny them…
