Beatification of Saint Marguerite d’Youville

A priest friend sent along the following archival video of the beatification of today’s saint, Marguerite d’Youville, back in 1959, by Pope Saint John XXIII. It’s in French, but even if you don’t get the words, glancing through the ceremony gives a window into the time just prior to the Second Vatican Council. The Fathers at the Council – and Pope John who called it – did not intend the chaos that was unleashed afterwards, but rather an organic development of doctrine and praxis. Such is borne out in the text of the documents. But that’s another story.

For now, pray, hope and don’t worry. Tradition – in the true sense of that term – will have the final say and its day. What was, may yet be again, albeit in a different key.
