Gift Guide: For the woman who is always busy

ChristmasRetroShop-GraphicsFairy1

I've been checking out gift guides lately. They range from the utterly ridiculous (for those who have everything) to the downright practical (for those who have nothing) and everything in between. So I didn't pause for a minute when our blog editor, Meaghen, suggested I come up with a gift list for the busy women in your life. Here's a short list of great gifts. Prayer and Devotion A Catholic Woman's Book of Days by Amy Welborn looks mighty lovely. I haven't read this, but it ... (Continue reading)

Women in combat

Titian_-_Polyptych_of_the_Resurrection_-_Virgin_Annunciate_-_WGA22786

Have you noticed there are an alarming number of combative females on television? I am not talking about women who are angry at everything but rather women who play “tough-guy” characters. The men are the calm writers or the slackers who need protection—while the women get their butts kicked by the bad guys, run headfirst into burning buildings, and call their female supervisors “sir.” The trend has been growing since before Uma Thurman “Killed Bill,” but it is alarming to ... A magical scarf

Иллиана_Кендрик

Walking to my flat late Friday afternoon after a chaotic morning, I was confronted with the fact that I hadn’t yet had lunch. I had an empty fridge at home, and was at that specific point of plunging blood sugar where just lying down in the middle of the road and moaning seemed like the most logical and helpful thing to do. Salvation presented itself just a block up the road in the form of my favourite tea shop, and I ... (Continue reading)

Should Women be Educated?

The topic of women’s education has been making the social media rounds and I’m sure more than a few feminists have flown into fits of rage because of it. The whole thing seems to have started with a blog post touting eight reasons parents should not send their girls, specifically, to college. They reasons are the following: She will attract the wrong type of man (only good-for-nothing men go to university). She will be in the near occasion of sin (universities are dens of ... Keep it Simple. Stupid.

I don’t know what it is about women, but most of us tend to find relationships utterly fascinating. Get some girls together, and regardless of where the conversation starts, it usually ends up in a discussion centering around interactions between the sexes. In some ways, I find this truly bizarre. I have absolutely brilliant friends in every field imaginable. We could be talking about politics, or investments, or law, or history, or medieval literature, or classic languages, or psychology, or philosophy, ... (Continue reading)

The Dreaded Valentine’s

So it's here. That day that strikes fear and dread into the heart of attached and unattached persons alike. The day of heart-shaped tchotchke’s and overpriced roses and honeymoons in heart-shaped Jacuzzis in Niagara Falls. Hallmark’s biggest day of the year. Valentine's Day. Ugh. For me, V-Day conjures up memories of disappointment and hurt, of unrequited love and dashed expectations—so much so that the day has been ruined even ten years into a very happy romance and marriage. There were the years in high school ... (Continue reading)

Sexual Revolevolution

While cycling through my blogroll the other day, I ended up being linked to an an article in The Telegraph. It starts out with quite a bang: A friend’s daughter recently started at a highly regarded boarding school. When her mother asked how she was enjoying the mixed-sex environment, the girl said quietly: “You have to give the boys oral sex or they get cross.” Reeling with shock, the mum protested that her darling daughter did not have to do ...
