Madonna of the Stairs

One star-lit night she gave Him birth,
the son of Mary fair.
God-sent to hammer nails in wood
and build the Master stair.

For men had lost their upward Way
ten thousand years and more,
when Christ was born to build the stairs
that lead to Yahweh’s Door.

Now favored mother Mary knew
that Yahweh wills us good.
What phantom does her mind disturb …
a man nailed to the wood?

Yet stars beam down on heaven’s Son
in Mary’s arms asleep.
While lambs gaze up from hay-strewn earth
and silently do weep.

The stairway to Yahweh was built
with holy blood and tears,
while Mary followed every step
with untold hopes and fears.

Two thousand years the stairs were there
for all of us to see,
and Mary climbed up every step
with Christ to set us free!

Then did the shepherds on the hill
awake that awesome day
to find the manger Babe who came
to show us all the Way?

A child grown man did build the stairs
to sunlit clouds above,
and we do follow up the stairs
that end at endless Love.
