Book by Father Daniel Callam, C.S.B., Provides a New Perspective on Current Films

A Catholic Goes to the Movies, a collection of thirty-seven film reviews by Daniel Callam, C.S.B., is now available from Justin Press.

The author founded The Canadian Catholic Review and edited it from 1983 until 1997. The reviews found in this book were originally published in The Chesterton Review.

Father Callam’s witty and insightful analysis of contemporary films seen through the double lens of the Catholic faith and the works of G.K. Chesterton offers the reader an entirely new perspective on an important medium. The films are seen as mirrors of the culture in which they originate and as windows that reveal both the Christian roots of the culture and the spiritual malaise that afflicts it. The reviews reflect the familiarity of the author with the classics of literature, both English and French.

” Fr. Daniel Callam’s reflections are the fruit of serious pondering of the meaning of a wide range of films, each of which reveals aspects of the condition of Late Western Man—each of which reveals us to ourselves. This is a deeply insightful book, a thoroughly enjoyable one, written beautifully, with humour and penetrating exegesis.” Michael D. O’Brien, Artist and author

The book will be valued by anyone seeking more than entertainment by going to the movies.
