Catholic Insight Privacy Code
Our commitment to privacy: Catholic Insight, a division of the Life Ethics Information Centre, a non-profit company, knows that protecting the privacy and confidentiality of your personal information is important to subscribers. This Privacy Code applies to personal information collected by Catholic Insight, including its websites. Be aware that our website may contain links to other websites provided and maintained exclusively by third parties not subject to this Privacy Code. Please review the privacy policies on any external website to determine its information handling practices.
Accountability:
Catholic Insight is responsible for personal information in its possession or custody. It has implemented policies and practices to protect personal information, and has established procedures to receive and respond to complaints and inquiries.
Accountability for Catholic Insight’s compliance with privacy laws and its Privacy Code rests with its privacy officer. However, other individuals within the organization may be responsible for the day-to-day collection and processing of personal information.

Identifying Purposes:
Catholic Insight collects only the necessary personal information, which may include names, addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, or other contact information, and personal financial information such as credit card numbers, needed for the purposes of administering advertising, magazine subscriptions, mailings to subscribers, and expenses of the production of Catholic Insight and its website.
When personal information is collected for a purpose not previously identified, the new purpose is identified prior to use. Unless this new purpose is required by law, the express or implied consent of the individual will be obtained before information can be used for that purpose.
Please note that information used for journalistic purposes is exempted from the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (the "Act"), and from the provisions of this Privacy Code. Catholic Insight reserves the right to retain information, research or other matters that fall within any claim for privilege it may choose to assert. Moreover, Catholic Insight reserves the right to retain or disclose personal information in circumstances of a violation of any stated terms of service or conditions of purchase, or in order to comply with applicable laws, lawful governmental requests, other legal and regulatory authorities or other legal reasons.
Consent:
Catholic Insight collects personal information via the intake of paper-based subscription request forms, telephoned subscription requests, email applications, book and other literature purchases, commissioning of freelance writers, payments of expenses, and securing advertising or other marketing initiatives in writing or by telephone.
On an occasional basis, personal information is used by Catholic Insight to solicit donations from subscribers towards assistance for operating expenses. Catholic Insight also solicits subscription renewals and provides the necessary personal information – namely, names and addresses – to its mailing house for the purpose of mailing each edition of the magazine to subscribers, for which limitations of any unauthorized use are secured.
Personal information is stored securely and deleted or destroyed when no longer necessary for legal, accounting or administrative purposes. Personal information is never used for any other purpose, nor is it given, sold, lent or rented to any individual or organization outside of Catholic Insight, without the express or implied consent of the individual involved.
By ordering a subscription, subscribing to the internet newsletter, purchasing books or other literature, writing or placing an advertisement in the magazine, a person implies his or her consent to the use of his or her personal information by Catholic Insight as described here. A person may withdraw consent at any time, subject to legal or contractual restrictions and reasonable notice.
Limiting collection:
Catholic Insight collects personal information only to the extent that it is necessary to fulfill the purposes identified.
Accuracy:
Catholic Insight strives to ensure personal information is accurate, complete and up-to-date, depending upon the use of the information and taking into account the interests of the individual.
Safeguards:
Catholic Insight safeguards personal information against loss or theft, as well as unauthorized access, disclosure, copying, use or modification, regardless of the format in which it is held. This is accomplished through physical, organizational and technological measures. Employees are aware of the importance of maintaining the confidentiality of personal information and care is taken in the disposal or destruction of personal information.
Openness:
Catholic Insight is open about its policies and practices with respect to the management of personal information. Individuals are able to acquire information about our policies and practices in a reasonable manner and in a form that is generally understandable.
Individual Access:
Upon request, Catholic Insight will inform an individual whether or not the organization holds personal information about him or her. An individual may be required to provide sufficient information to permit Catholic Insight to provide an account of the existence, use or disclosure of any such personal information.
Catholic Insight will respond to an individual's request within a reasonable time and at minimal or no cost to the individual. The requested information shall be provided or made available in a form that is generally understandable.
When an individual successfully demonstrates the inaccuracy or incompleteness of personal information, Catholic Insight will amend the information as required.
Challenging compliance:
Catholic Insight will investigate all complaints. If a complaint is found to be justified through either an internal or external complaint review process, it will take appropriate measures, including, if necessary, amending its policies and practices.
