Call to resist “gay-friendly” indoctrination

Victoria, B.C.- The Catholic Civil Rights League (CCRL), Western Region, has submitted to the B.C. Ministry of Education a critique of the recently-issued guidelines based on the manual Make Space, Giving Voice. This document is based on the 2006 so-called Corren agreement by which two homosexuals of that name made a private contract with the government permitting them to make “gay-friendly” changes in the public school curriculum.

When first publicized, the only change was portrayed as a non-mandatory Grade 12 social justice elective. It now appears that all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 will be required to participate in “queer-positive’ classes, even against their parents’ wishes. Some of the largest provincial school boards have refused to provide guarantees that children may be withdrawn from classes in such cases.
However, as Guelph University professor, Keith Cassidy, says, “The problems… cannot be addressed by {simply} withdrawing children from classes.”

Apart from the general fact that the new policy “ will transform state schools into instruments for ideological instruction,” CCRL Western director, Sean Murphy, notes its impact on the fundamental freedoms of conscience, religion and freedom of speech. Its insertion into the syllabus entails time lost in core curriculum subjects particularly in English and general literacy. Furthermore, the precepts taught may result in isolating students from their parents, families and communities because of the clash of values involved.

The CCLC is encouraging parents to “resist, counter and protest`` against the new teachers’ manual currently being distributed. It is seeking to collaborate with other family-friendly groups in this endeavour.
